Eat Local Ohio Valley

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Definition:

Locavore  (loh-kuh-vohr)- noun.  A person whose diet focuses on foods grown and produced nearby, typically 100 miles.

I am compiling information about sources for foodstuffs (fruits, vegetables, honey, jams and jellies, syrups, meats, cheeses, eggs, wine) that are grown  or produced in our Ohio Valley area (within 100 miles or so of Ferda’s Garden Center).  I am putting together a web site that locavores or potential locavores can use to find sources of local foods and beverages.  If you know of any farmers who sell their produce, meats or cheeses locally, or vintners who produce local wines, or restaurants that use local ingredients in their food, please help me out by letting me know about them.  Or if you know someone who would know about these sources, please share that information.  You can phone me at the garden center (740-546-4467) or email me at lynn@ferdas.com or fax me at 740-546-3241.

Two More Days

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

We’ll be open for the spring season beginning on Saturday, March 15th.  Join us during our regular hours from 9AM to 5PM.

The early spring edition of the Leaflet (the newsletter from Ferda’s Garden Center) should be in your mailbox next week just in time for Easter.  If you don’t get one, you aren’t on our mailing list.  Stop in at the garden center or send us an email and we’ll add your name and address to the list.

Rest In Peace

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Thank you to all of you who have sent thoughts my way for my Dad, Chuck Burris, who died on Wednesday, February 20th.   Many of you know him from the days when he was in charge of seeding and transplanting the vegetables and flats of flowers we grew here at Ferda’s.  He was instrumental in helping Bob and me get the Garden Center started in 1979 and 1980– giving us financial help as well as his unpaid labor and good advice.  We will all miss him!
